PaPSC, PMHCA, and Youth Move PA come together in partnership to offer this 3-hour Stand Against Stigma Virtual Workshop for Youth and Young Adults and the staff that serve the youth and young adult demographic across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Stand Against Stigma Workshop - Objectives:

  • Define stigma.  What is Stigma?
  • Identify the various ways individuals can experience stigma associated with having a mental health diagnosis and/or a substance use disorder through collective brainstorming and discussion.
  • Explore pre-existing notions including positive and negative stereotypes of individuals who suffer from a substance use disorder and/or mental health disorder.
  • Identify consequences of having a substance use disorder and/or a mental health disorder stigma along with the willingness and the ability to access services.
  • Consider ways to address stigma at individual and agency levels. Gain concepts and practice tools toward developing attitudes and environments that challenge stigma and support individuals that suffer from a mental health and/or substance use disorder.
  • Discuss discrimination and related concepts, finding personal relevance in these terms through workshops and group discussion.

Jenna Martorana has been added to the Stand Against Stigma Virtual Workshop to give a 15-minute presentation on how stigma has affected her life and how she has overcome stigma.  Jenna is 26 years old and a Youth MOVE PA member.  Jenna struggled the most with her mental health as a teen and during the beginning of college, she understands the negative impact that stigma has on someone’s recovery.  She has been working to end the stigma around mental health and suicide. This has been her focus for the last few years.  She became part of the Miss America Organization in 2018 when she was a senior in college and started partnering with chapters of the National Alliance on Mental Illness to share her story, which she believes is a key aspect to ending stigma.  She enjoys educating others on how they can break stigma in their lives by sharing her experience, strength, and hope.  Jenna now works with NAMI Keystone, 6 local NAMI chapters, and she is the president of the NAMI club at her university where among other accomplishments, she is almost finished completing her master’s degree to become a school counselor. Through NAMI, Jenna is trained as an In Our Own Voices presenter and an Ending the Silence presenter which allows her to speak with middle school and high school students about the warning signs of mental illnesses, resources available, and how they can create stigma-free schools.  Jenna is also trained as a peer support specialist and co-facilitates NAMI Philadelphia’s teen support group; she actively works with teens on a consistent basis.  Jenna is excited and looking forward to being part of Youth Move PAs, Stand Against Stigma Virtual Workshop.  At Youth Move PA, we are thrilled to have Jenna be a presenter as part of our Virtual Workshop for Mental Health Awareness Month.

Interactive Zoom workshop for youth and young adults including staff that serve the youth and young adult population throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Training will be interactive and involved with the use of 4 breakout room/workshops and 2 Ted Talks.

*Certificate of participation will be provided upon completion of this training*

*No Registration Fee, FREE TRAINING*
